skip to content what is mdm? home about overview methods policies tools contact search for: what is mdm? everything you need to know! master data management (mdm) is not just an application - it is a composition of people, methods , policies and tools that optimize the use of information to achieve the organization's operational and strategic business objectives. we have experienced that it is hard to get a good understanding about mdm because it is so large concept. in this web site we aim to structure the contents of mdm into manageable pieces and make it easier to understand. in short we would say that mdm is intended to support organization's business needs by providing consistent master data across applications. that is not just a technical issue - it requires that we define rules and practices. methods principles and integration rules that the mdm solution could follow. these form the basis of the solution. policies maintaining master data (data governance and stewardship). what master data we support. tools applications, services, infrastructure and technology master data management (mdm) has not lost its importance although we are going more and more to service-oriented applications and microservices. we still face situations when it really makes sense to use mdm solution. why is that? the problem itself is pretty simple: key business information (like customers, products, suppliers...) is needed by several systems. maybe the simplest solution is that we manually enter the same data in several systems. that might work when there is very little data but even in small companies the amount of key business information is pretty large so it becomes very laborious and error prone to keep same data manually in sync between different systems. so, we need something more advanced. in a " perfect world " key business information (=master data) would be easily and fast available from one source and data would be stored only once - having only one copy of the data. as an example we could think that crm application contains all customers and customers would not be stored and maintained anywhere else. so, if for example erp or invoicing application needs information about customers then it would fetch them from crm. if all applications would behave like this and the latency would not be an issue our life would be very simple! there would not be any need synchronizing any data. real world is not perfect world however this is not the case in a real world. typically the same data is stored in several applications and we are forced to store several copies of the data. why is this? typically for historical reasons. applications may not have been designed to work together so fetching required data from other source may not be supported. changing applications to fetch data from other source might be a big investment - it takes time and money. it can be quite risky also. sometimes making any changes to integrated applications is not even possible. one thing is latency. if the source of data is physically far away from the application who needs the data then it might be too slow to fetch the data from different source. the resolution is to have a copy of the data in an application which needs it. as a summary we could say that many times we are forced to have several copies of the data in different applications. synchronizing several copies of the data what happens when we need to maintain several copies of the same data? we need to take care of data synchronization . and what is that? at first it might seem simple but when you go into more details you find out that keeping several copies of the data consistently in sync is a complex thing. i mean really complex. you have to solve how the same data entity can be identified in different applications and how to take care of simultaneous updates that applications might execute. then you have to think about how to take care of synchronization conflicts. technologies of each integrated system might vary. some applications might be on microsoft .net platform and some on java or php. the more you go into details the bigger the task appears to be. that is where mdm comes to play. mdm is a concept that aims to solve these issues. so, we cannot see much benefit of mdm if we would be in the "perfect world" but in real world that can really help. i must point out that mdm is not a silver bullet. mdm solution consists of the tools but also a set of standards, processes and rules that we must understand. mdm is not just a tool! in overview page you can find more information which introduces mdm to you. tags architecture change management framework governance ibm implementation master data management maturity model mdm overview policies processes soa standards strategy tools wikipedia share on facebook share share on twitter tweet share on google plus share share on linkedin share home overview methods policies tools contact theme by tesseract
